Summary View Time Options
• Absolute Time
n The time of day (HH:MM:SS.0000) at which each frame was
captured.
n Used when the actual time of day is required. Be sure the
correct DATE and TIME is set.
• Delta Time
n The time interval (S.000.000) between adjacent displayed
frames.
n Useful for determining how quickly nodes are transmitting
between frames and for seeing a server’s turnaround time.
• Relative Time
n The time interval between the Marked frame and the current
frame. Right-click and select the option to mark a frame.
n You can find the time span over a number of frames in order
to make response time and throughput measurements.
Absolute time is useful when you are trying to jump quickly to the frames that were captured when users started reporting problems.
It is also very helpful when comparing data from two traces to do round trip
propagation delay calculations.
Delta time is measured from the time one frame was seen to the time the next one was seen. Delta time includes any “dead time” on the wire between the frames.
Relative time is very helpful in baselining measurements as indicated above.
The time is zero at the marked (F2) frame, all relative times before the marked frame are measured backwards from that frame. All relative times after that frame are measured forward in reference to that time.

• Relative time - time from the start of the capture period (or marked frame)
• Delta time - time between frames
• Absolute time - time of day frame was received
